IRAP (Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist Protein) is an anti-inflammation therapy that is best for patient’s suffering from Osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis causes joint swelling, inflammation and pain due to cartilage damage. Interleukin-1 is normally secreted by cells when the body is experiencing inflammation in response to the injury. However, Interleukin-1 can accelerate cartilage damage therein causing an ongoing cycle of joint inflammation and deterioration.
How it Works
IRAP was developed to counteract and slow the progression of the effects of Interleukin-1. IRAP, once injected into the damaged cartilage, binds to Interleukin-1and prevents it from causing pain and inflammation within the area. This blocking that occurs is also helpful in then creating an environment in the cartilage where a natural healing cascade can develop.
IRAP is like PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) therapy in that blood is taken from the patient and processed with a centrifuge. However, in IRAP, a specialized syringe is used to collect the blood which then stimulates the production of the antagonist protein. The blood in the syringe is incubated for 18-24 hours. Once this process is done, the syringe is put in a centrifuge which then separates out the plasma that has been enriched with the antagonist protein. The affected joint is then injected using ultrasound guidance typically once a week for three weeks.
IRAP effectiveness depends upon the patient’s degree of osteoarthritis as well as one’s own body health. IRAP has been proven to be very effective for patients who suffer from mild osteoarthritis and synovitis (inflammations of the lining in the joint). Typically, the number of sessions ranges anywhere from three to six.
